OAKS (2015-17)

OAKS 1 (2015/16)

The Outcomes After Kidney injury in Surgery (OAKS) study was a prospective multicentre national cohort study designed and led by STARSurg in the United Kingdom and Ireland conducted between 2015-16. The primary aim of this study was to quantify the incidence of AKI in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal and liver surgery and define the morbidity and mortality associated with this.

There were 173 centres within the UK and Ireland that participated in OAKS-1 with a total of 5745 patients. The key findings were that the overall rate of AKI was 14.2% as defined using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria and the 30-day mortality was 1.8%.

The data from this study was used to develop a pragmatic prognostic model to stratify patients according to risk of developing AKI after major gastrointestinal surgery: the OAKS score. This prognostic risk score is readily available to all here.

From the results of OAKS-2, an intervention was developed for the re-audit (OAKS-II) which took place in 2017.

OAKS 2 (2016/17)

OAKS-2 is a follow up study of all patients included in OAKS-I conducted between 2016-17. The primary outcome of this study was to measure the proportion of adherence of the OAKS cohort to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Renal Association guidelines requiring post-discharge renal function monitorying and clinical follow-up in patients who developed AKI. The secondary outcomes included survival at 1-year, cardiovascular morbidity and new diagnosis of CKD (according to the KDIGO guidelines).

The findings from this study will be available in our future publications.
