RECON is our 18/19 project: REspiratory ComplicatiOns after abdomiNal Surgery.
Post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are a common complication of major abdominal surgery
and associated with increased morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay. Royal College of
Anaesthetists (RCOA) and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines provide pre-, intra- and
post-operative measures to reduce risk of PPCs.
This study aims to: Explore the incidence of PPCs following major abdominal and incisional hernia surgery
Secondary: (1) Evaluate adherence to perioperative measure to reduce risk of PPCs; (2) establish risk
factors for development of PPCs

Compulsory E-Learning
STARSurg has produced a series of 5 e-learning modules for the RECON project. These cover:
-RECON: Introduction and Selecting the Right Patients
-Identifying Surgical Incisions
-Assessment of Post-operative Pulmonary Complications
-The Clavien-Dindo Classification
-Data Safety
Completion of all of them should take no longer half an hour to an hour. Successful completion is compulsory to participate in RECON. You need to achieve 100% in each module, which includes all the interactive content in the module. You may repeat the module as many times as you like. Progress is saved so you may log out and log back in and resume at the same place.
